Sakurajima, November 23, 2009

It is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan with continuous volcanic activity. The most violent eruption in historical time occurred between 1471 and 1476 and reached magnitude 5 on the volcanic explosion index . During the magnitude 4 eruption of 1914, the volcanic island connected at one point with the Ōsumi peninsula on the mainland.

On March 13, 2011, the volcano erupted again, throwing ash and lava several kilometers into the air.

Another eruption occurred on August 18, 2013.

Another particularly violent explosive eruption occurred on October 24, 2014. Within a few minutes, an ash cloud shot about 4 km into the sky.

In August 2015, the Japanese meteorological authority warned of a possible new eruption, which began on August 20, and issued warning level 4. Only a few days earlier, the operator Kyushu Electric Power became the first Japanese reactor after the Fukushima nuclear disaster to have a block of Sendai nuclear power plant , which is about 50 kilometers from the volcano, restarted.

On February 5, 2016, there was an eruption, including several lightning bolts accompanying the ash eruption.

Several eruptions occurred in September and November 2019.
