Sala dell'Albergo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sala dell'Albergo was the name given to the room in which the board of directors ( banco ) of the great Venetian brotherhoods met. This room is located on the upper floor of the school's administration wing, which usually has a separate entrance next to the main entrance with the large entrance hall and the large brotherhood hall, to which a representative staircase leads. The name Albergo for the administration wing probably comes from the fact that the school also had rooms where one could spend the night, e.g. B. if it was not possible to go to other islands in adverse weather conditions. The Sala dell'Albergo was splendidly decorated and the paintings there made reference to the history of the Scoula or the function of the room.

The cycle of images in the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, produced between 1494 and 1505/10, depicts the history and miracles of the relic of the cross that this school received as a gift from the Grand Chancellor of Cyprus, Philippe de Mézières , in 1369 on the occasion of his visit to Venice . Most of the school's furnishings were lost after Napoleon closed it . Six of the original nine paintings from the Sala dell'Albergo of the Scuola San Giovanni Evangelista are in the Galleria dell'Accademia .

The original furnishings of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco have been preserved , as this Scuola was the only one that was not closed at the insistent request of the citizens. In their Sala dell'Albergo there are wall paneling from the 16th century, stalls for the head of the brotherhood, an altar, wall and ceiling paintings by Tintoretto and the carved and gilded coffered ceiling.

The paintings in the Albergo of the Scuola Grande di Santa Maria della Carità mainly refer to the dowry given to brides in need, who were discussed here and the ceremonial awarding of which was celebrated here by the Scuola: Titian's Temple of Mary is at the original location, which is now the Galleria dell 'Accademia heard.
