Salcedo is the capital of the Hermanas Mirabal Province ( Mirabal Sisters ) in the Dominican Republic .
history
Until 1896 Salcedo was still called Juana Núñez . The name was changed to the present day in honor of the independence fighter Francisco Antonio Salcedo . Around 1900 the city was still part of the Moca district in the La Vega province .
Salcedo is the birthplace of the three Mirabal sisters who planned the overthrow of the dictator Rafael Trujillo and were murdered with their driver by Trujillo's henchmen on November 25, 1960 on the way back from Puerto Plata, where they had visited their imprisoned husbands. Near Conuco, five kilometers east of the city, there is a museum called Ojo de Agua (Eng. Water eye) in honor of the three sisters, which was set up by the fourth sister Bélgica Adela Mirabal.
Since 1952 Salcedo has been the capital of the province of Hermanas Mirabal, which was also called Salcedo until 2007.
economy
Since the soil around Salcedo is very fertile, agriculture plays an important role economically. Agricultural products are primarily bananas , coffee , yucca and sweet potatoes . However, other foods such as citrus fruits , cocoa and other vegetables such as corn and coconuts are also grown.
