Saldula opacula is a bug from the family of saldidae (Saldidae).

features

The bugs are 3.0 to 4.7 millimeters long. The genus Saldula includes species in which the pronotum is completely black and in which the hemielytres completely overlap. Species identification is often difficult. Saldula opacula can be determined relatively easily because the species is very small and has characteristic patterned hemielytres. It can be confused with Saldula saltatoria . The side edge of the corium of the hemielytres is completely pale and dark only at the base and apex. A white spot is enclosed in a black line that runs along the edge of the page. The body of the animals seems to be a little more shiny than that of the other species of the genus. The ratio of the second to the first antennae is 1.7: 1.8, whereas in Saldula saltatoria it is 1.9: 2.0. The species can also be confused with a form of Saldula saltatoria , in which the side edge of the corium is also continuously light. There are individuals with slightly shortened and fully developed hemielytres.

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed throughout Europe and occurs in the east as far as Japan. It is also common in North America. In Germany it is widespread but rare and only more common locally in some places. The species is rare in the UK in Norfolk and Suffolk and appears to be widespread in Scotland. Humid heaths and peat mud areas between peat moss ( Sphagnum ) in bogs and vegetation-free areas in salty habitats on the coast and inland are settled. In the former habitats the animals are on average darker and smaller than in the latter.

Way of life

The development is similar to the other Saldula species in Central Europe.
