Sally Deaver Murray (born December 14, 1933 in Philadelphia , † August 14, 1963 in Ambler , Pennsylvania ) was an American ski racer .
Life
Deaver was born the only daughter of surgeon Joshua Deaver and his wife Priscilla Sailer. She grew up in Whitemarsh , a suburb of Philadelphia . Even as a teenager she showed versatile athletic talent. During her school years at the Springside School for Girls in Philadelphia, she played hockey , basketball and lacrosse . However, she became internationally known for her success in alpine ski racing .
From 1952 to 1959 Deaver was a member of the US national ski team. With the Alta Cup , the Roch Cup , the Harriman Cup and the Silver Belt , she won the most famous races in the USA. In 1956 she was US champion in slalom and giant slalom. The following year she was able to defend her title in slalom.
Deaver celebrated her most important international success in 1958 at the World Ski Championships in Bad Gastein, Austria . Surprisingly, she won the silver medal in the giant slalom behind the Canadian Lucille Wheeler . This remained the only medal for the United States in these championships.
After retiring from the national ski team, she devoted herself more to her passion for horses and started a career as a show jumper. In the summer of 1963 Deaver sustained fatal injuries in a riding accident when she was thrown from her horse.
One year after her death, Sally Deaver's parents donated the Sally Deaver Award in memory of their daughter, which has been awarded to the US slalom champion annually since 1965.
