Sally Priesand
Sally Jane Priesand (born June 27, 1946 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is the first formally ordained female rabbi in the United States and, after Regina Jonas , who was privately ordained by Rabbi Max Dienemann in Offenbach in 1935 , the second female rabbi to be ordained worldwide. She was ordained on June 3, 1972 at the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion , Cincinnati .
After her ordination, Priesand first worked at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in New York as an assistant rabbi and then at the Beth El Temple in Elizabeth, New Jersey . From 1981 until her retirement in 2006, she was rabbi at the Monmouth Reform Temple in Tinton Falls, New Jersey .
