The Salmon River (English for "salmon river") is a 92 km long river in the northeast of Vancouver Island in the Canadian province of British Columbia .

River course

The Salmon River rises at an altitude of 1240  m in the mountainous region in the northwest of the Strathcona Provincial Park . It initially flows a short distance north before turning to the northeast. The river valley is flanked in the west by Mount Judson, 1741  m high . After 35 km the Salmon River turns to the northwest and finally joins the Johnstone Strait at Sayward . In the lower reaches of the river there are numerous bends in the river . The main tributaries of the Salmon River are the Memekay River and White River , both from the left.

River diversion

In the 1950s a weir ( ) was built at kilometer 58 on the Salmon River , above which a drainage channel leads 7 km east to Brewster Lake . This is drained south to Campbell Lake . The diverted water is thus fed to the hydropower plants located on the lower reaches of the Campbell River . When the weir was built, it was not an obstacle to fish migration in the river, as there was a natural obstacle downstream. In the 1970s, this natural barrier was removed by the BC Ministry of Environment (MOE). This made the river accessible to migratory fish up to the weir. The weir is operated by BC Hydro . In recent years there have been plans for the construction of a fish ladder and other structural measures to make the headwaters of the Salmon River accessible to migratory fish in the future.
