The Salmon River ( English for " salmon river") is a 29 km long tributary of the Portland Canal in the Canadian province of British Columbia and in the US state of Alaska .

The Salmon River forms the outflow of the Salmon Glacier in Canada . Right at the beginning, it absorbs the meltwater from the Boundary Glacier located further west in Alaska . It flows south through the mountains. After 4.5 km the river crosses the border into Alaska. Then he takes the Cascade Creek coming from Canada from the left. The Texas Creek , the most important tributary, flows 17 km above the confluence on the right side into the Salmon River. To the east, the Bear River Ridge separates the catchment area of the Salmon River from that of the Bear River . The Thumb Creek meets the Salmon River on the right before it finally flows into the head end of the Portland Canal. The village of Hyder is on the left bank of the river .

The Salmon River drains an area of about 520 km². The mean discharge above the confluence of Texas Creek , 18 km above the mouth, is 30.2 m³ / s. The highest monthly outflows occur during the melting of the glaciers in the summer months of July and August.

The river was named in 1868 by Staff Commander David Pender of the Royal Navy .
