Saloua Raouda Choucair

Saloua Raouda Choucair ( Arabic سلوى روضة شقير, DMG Salwā Rauḍa Šuqair ; born June 24, 1916 in Beirut , Ottoman Empire ; died January 27, 2017 ) was a Lebanese painter and sculptor .

Life

Choucair studied at the Beirut College for Women . Artistic training stations were in 1935 in the studio of the Lebanese painter Moustafa Farroukh (1901–1957) and in 1942 with Omar Onsi (1901–1969). She had her first exhibition in 1947 in a gallery in Beirut. When Choucair came to Paris in 1948 , she began to combine her experience of abstraction in Arab art with modern Western art. In Paris she studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts and attended Fernand Léger's studio . In 1950 she exhibited at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles and in 1951 had a solo exhibition in Paris with Colette Allendy . In the 1960s, she expanded her work to include sculpture, and in 1963 she was awarded for a stone sculpture in Beirut's public space.

The Tate Modern acquired a number of sculptures and pictures: Composition in Blue Module 1947-51 , The Screw 1975–7 , Infinite Structure 1963–5 , Poem Wall 1963–5 and Poem 1963–5 . In 2013 these were part of a retrospective showing the Tate in London.
