The Rothalsige- or Gelbrotköpfige salpingidae ( Salpingus ruficollis , Syn. : Rhinosimus ruficollis ) is a beetle from the family of salpingidae (Salpingidae).
features
The beetles are 3.3 to 4.5 millimeters long. They have a noticeably elongated, flattened, orange-colored head with a broadened front. This starts wide at the pronotum . The head is dark between the compound eyes . The compound eyes extend to the front edge of the pronotum, which means that the temples cannot be seen. The pronotum, the base of the antennae and the legs are orange, the wings (elytres) steel blue-black. The latter have a flat impression behind the base and are structured by rows of dots that become finer at the back. The last five antennae are widened. The species can be confused with Vincenzellus ruficollis , which however has a shorter head and whose forehead is rimmed to the compound eyes.
Occurrence and way of life
The species is widespread in Europe to the far north and is also found locally on the British Isles. The adults occur from April to May and are common. They live in forests and trees on and under the bark of dead wood, especially of deciduous trees, and less often on conifers such as spruce. Both the adults and the larvae feed on bark beetles and their pre- imaginal stages.
