Salt Island is an island in the British Virgin Islands , which is approximately eight kilometers southeast of the main island of Tortola . It was named after the salt basin there and it covers an area of 77 ha (189 ac ).
history
On October 29, 1867, the British passenger liner RMS Rhone sank off the island during a hurricane . The wreckage of this ship was used as the backdrop for some scenes in the film The Deep (1977) and is a popular spot for diving and snorkeling .
As of 1993, Norwell Durant was the only resident of the island. Durant moved to Tortola in 2004 for health reasons, where he died in November of the same year. He is buried on Salt Island.
