Salto del Guairá is a district and the capital of the Department Canindeyú on the border with Brazil in the far east of Paraguay , around 230 kilometers north of Ciudad del Este . Its name is derived from the earlier Saltos del Guairá waterfalls , which sank in the Itaipú reservoir in 1982 . The city has about 21,000 inhabitants, the district 37,600 inhabitants.

history

The earliest colonial settlement in today's Paraguay was located here, Ciudad Real , founded in 1556 and abandoned in the 17th century . The present city was founded on March 3, 1959, the district on July 30, 1973.

climate

The mean annual temperature is 23-25 ° C, the average minimum temperature is 11.2 ° C in June and the average maximum temperature is 31.5 ° C in December. The relative humidity is 75%. The mean precipitation varies between 1400 mm and 1600 mm per year. August has the lowest precipitation with 66 mm and December the highest with 188 mm.

economy

The city's economy is mainly based on shopping tourism from Brazil. After the construction of the 3600 m long Ayrton-Senna Bridge in 1998, three kilometers upstream, the number of Brazilian tourists increased significantly. Since the Brazilian government allowed the establishment of duty-free shops in its own border towns from July 2018, 300,000 jobs on the Paraguayan side have been threatened, especially in the cities of Ciudad del Este and Salto del Guairá. In order to attract tourists in the future, a coastal road (Costanera) with a beach will be built along the river, which should be completed by the end of 2019.
