from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Salvador Ibáñez (* 1854 in Valencia ; † 1920 ) was a Spanish guitar maker . The name continued to be used from around 1936 by the now world-famous Japanese company Ibanez .

Career

At the age of eleven, Ibáñez began his training as a guitar maker at Calle Muela near Valencia. In 1870 he founded his own workshop. Ibáñez built guitars , ukuleles , mandolins and other stringed instruments. In 1897 he built one of the first double neck guitars. His instruments are still considered to be outstanding instruments from this period. When he died in 1920, his two sons took over the workshop.

Ibanez

From 1928 the Japanese company Hoshino Gakki imported guitars from this workshop to Japan. When the workshop was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, Hoshino Gakki bought the rights to the name Ibanez Salvador and sold guitars he had produced himself through this brand. The brand name was later shortened to Ibanez .

Julian Bream played a Salvador Ibáñez guitar. Eric Clapton owned several Salvador Ibáñez guitars, one of which fetched $ 42,000 at a 1999 charity auction.
