Salvador Ximenes Soares

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Salvador Ximenes Soares is an East Timorese journalist and politician who also held political offices in Indonesia during the Indonesian occupation.

In the civil profession, Soares was editor-in-chief of the East Timorese newspaper Suara Timor Timur (STT), but received a seat in the Indonesian People's Consultative Assembly (DPR) for the ruling Golkar party . But he had to give up this in 1999 under pressure from the Indonesian military. Soares was considered moderate and a supporter of the Indonesian governor of East Timor, José Abílio Osório Soares , whom the military considered too soft. East Timor’s Golkar boss Armindo Soares Mariano dismissed Salvador Ximenes Soares as "disloyal to Golkar".

In the Barisan Rakyat Timor Timur (BRTT), Salvador Ximenes Soares then became general secretary under Francisco Lopes da Cruz . The BRTT was merged in June 1999 with Forum Persatuan Demokrasi dan Keadilan (FPDK, German  Forum for Unity, Democracy and Justice ) to form the United Front for East Timor (UNIF), as the umbrella organization of the pro-Indonesian militias . After the Indonesians withdrew from East Timor and the last wave of violence by the Indonesian security forces and militias, Soares returned to his homeland. He said that independence leader Xanana Gusmão had invited him personally.

From 1999 to 2000 he was a member of the National Consultative Council , the transitional parliament under the then UN administration and from 2000 to 2001 of its successor, the National Council . Soares represented the former proponents of an autonomy solution for East Timor within the Indonesian state. The people of East Timor decided in favor of independence in the independence referendum on August 30, 1999 .

Soares is now editor of the newspaper Suara Timor Lorosa'e (STL), which he revived from the former STT in 2000. In 2003 he was also editor-in-chief of the STL.
