Estanislau de Sousa Saldanha

Estanislau Alau de Sousa Saldanha (born November 29, 1964 in Uato-Lari , Portuguese Timor ) is a university professor from East Timor .

Career

The son of farmers, Saldanha worked in the fields and with the cattle since childhood, with his father making sure that his son attended school. Saldanha attended elementary school in Uato-Lari up to the third grade, came to the Sta. Teresina Colegio in Ossu and the Technical School of Liceu Dr. Francisco Machado in Dili . His brothers were already studying in Portugal . The political upheavals in the colony from 1975 and the subsequent occupation by Indonesia interrupted Saldanha's school career. From 1980 he went to the pre-secondary Catholic school in Santo Paulo in Dili and from 1983 to 1986 at the Colégio de São José .

At the University of Diponegoro (1986-1993) in Semarang , Indonesia , Saldanha received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. Thanks to a scholarship from NZAID, he was able to study at Massey University in New Zealand . He received a Master of Technology degree in October 1997 and completed postgraduate studies as a chemical engineer. In September 2014 Saldanha completed a degree in Marketing Management at Udayana University in Bali .

As early as 1985 Saldanha began working for the Timor Timur Provincial Government while studying . In 1994 he moved to the Mining Authority to work as head of the Mining Technology, Management and Environment Department. Here he organized a program that brought employees to training in the field of mining and oil production in Indonesia. Some of the participants work in the National Petroleum Agency today. The program ran from 1997 to 1999. As early as 1994, Saldanha co-founded the Sapiente Timor Lorosae Foundation to prepare East Timorese students for universities in Indonesia. The Pusat Studi Pembangunan Timor Timur ( German  Center for Development Studies East Timor ) and the Technical Institute Baucau emerged from the foundation . Saldanha was also committed to environmental protection and the protection of resources during this time. His involvement with the Foundation ended when Saldanha went to New Zealand in 1997.

In 1999 the Indonesians withdrew from East Timor and the country remained under UN administration until 2002 . In 2001 Saldanha returned to East Timor with his family. Saldanha had been a member of the East Timor Study Group (ESTG) since it was founded in 1997 , which later became the Timor Institute for Development Studies (TIDS). Saldanha worked as director of ESTG until the end of 2002. When a foundation wanted to set up a university, Saldanha was used as an advisor. He spoke out in favor of founding a technical university instead of another university alongside the Universidade Nasionál Timór Lorosa'e (UNTL). In 2002 the Dili Institute of Technology (DIT) came into being, of which Saldanha became deputy rector and in November 2006 rector. He gave up the post in 2014.

Estanislau was the sixth of nine children of Januario Saldanha and Amelia Sousa, farmers who could neither read nor write. The parents died when Estanislau was twelve years old. His family is considered influential. Estanislau is related to the publisher of the newspaper Suara Timor Lorosa'e and João Mariano Saldanha , who is the founder of Partidu Republikanu (PR) and who was also a former member of the DIT's business faculty.

Estanislau de Sousa Saldanha has been married to Isabel Franklin de Jesus Marques Belo (Betty) from Uailili since 1993 . You have three sons.
