The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (Satern) is the network of radio amateurs of the Civil Protection Unit of the Salvation Army ( Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services ) for emergency radio .

The SATERN network is mainly in the USA . Other countries in which the SATERN network is active are Russia and India . The network serves to convey messages, search queries and logistical messages between the public, authorities and the agencies of the Salvation Army. In 2012 SATERN had 4,600 trained members, mostly in the USA, where it also organizes its own courses and amateur radio exams for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

history

The network was founded in 1988 by Captain Patrick McPherson, civil protection coordinator for central Illinois and eastern Iowa . Initially, the network was used during local disasters, such as B. the 1990 tornado in Plainfield (Illinois) or the crash of an ATR 72 of American Eagle Airlines in Illinois in 1994. With an increasing number of members and spreading, initially mainly in the USA, SATERN was mainly active during national natural disasters , such as the earthquake of Kobe 1995 , Hurricane Mitch 1998 or the Gölcük earthquake in 1999 , in which it established the first telephone connection to Turkey after the earthquake. In connection with Hurricane Mitch, SATERN frequencies have been designated as the official emergency radio frequencies by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). During the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , u. a. A radio link established between two blood banks in California and near Ground Zero . In the 21st century, the focus was on searching for the missing of victims of the hurricanes . In the Atlantic hurricane season in 2004 requests were processed over 1,000. For this SATERN received a national award. 25,508 missing persons were located during Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in 2005. 2005 was the first time with Satern amateur radio organization, the allocation of frequencies of a federal agency . In 2007 the Department of Homeland Security issued three callsigns (not amateur callsigns ) to SATERN.

The SATERN network supports the Salvation Army in the event of a disaster by providing emergency radio and providing information on the availability of trained radio amateurs as manual switching centers .
