Sam Allen (jazz pianist)
Sam Allen (born January 30, 1909 in Middleport , Ohio , † September 1963 in California ) was an American jazz pianist of the Swingara.
Live and act
Allen came to New York City at the age of 19 and was soon performing in Herbert Cowans' band at Rockland Palace. The following year he returned to Ohio and played with Alex Jackson until 1930. Back in New York, he worked from the early 1930s on Dave Nelson 's Harlem Highlights, with which the first recordings were made in 1932 ("I Ain't Got Nobody"). In the following years he played in the swing bands and orchestras of Dicky Wells , Teddy Hill , Bob Howard , Slim Gaillard and Stuff Smith . In the field of jazz he was involved in 21 recording sessions between 1931 and 1939.
Sam Allen should not be confused with the jazz guitarist of the same name, Sam "Christopher" Allen, who played with Hot Lips Page , Roy Eldridge , Cootie Williams and Clyde Bernhardt in the 1940s .
