Middleport is a parish in Meigs County , Ohio , United States . It is located in southeast Ohio on the west bank of the Ohio River between the ports of Pittsburgh and Cincinnati . The population was 2,525 at the 2000 census .

geography

Due to its location on the Ohio River, Middleport soon became an important stopover for river shipping. Since there were coal deposits nearby, the steamships could be supplied with coal here.

The communities neighboring the river are Pomeroy and Syracuse upstream and Addison downstream . Across the river is the town of Mason in Mason County , West Virginia .

history

Middleport owes its name to the fact that it is the middle port between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati on the Ohio River.

education

Middleport schools are part of the Meigs Local School District . There is a in the municipality campus of the University of Rio Grande . Eleven other colleges and universities are within 60 miles (100 km).
