history

Foundation and growth

Medina was founded in 1816 on the area of the former Connecticut Western Reserve and has been the county seat from the beginning. The founding of the city, which originally had 237 acres of land, attracted many Connecticut settlers . Medina was officially registered as a municipality in 1835.

The city grew rather subdued at the beginning, but with the completion of the Ohio-Erie Canal in the 1830s, steady growth began, so that in 1890 there were 2073 people in Medina. With the connection to the railway network, the city gained further importance as a transshipment point for goods. In the 20th century, the place benefited from the influx of citizens from Cleveland , so that Medina was the second largest parish in the county in 2000.

Fire disasters in the 19th century

In the 19th century, two fire disasters occurred in Medina: First, a fire in 1848 destroyed the entire business district. In 1870 another 45 buildings burned down. After the first fire, they failed to ensure that adequate fire fighting equipment was provided. The second fire was described as one of the most devastating in America at the time; however, it was not until 1877 that any significant money was invested in fire-fighting in Medina.

After the fire of 1870, it took about a decade to replace the destroyed buildings in the center of the city. This explains why these houses in the center of the city are now more in keeping with the Victorian architectural style, which only spread some time after the city was founded.

Demographics

In the 2000 census, the place had 25,139 inhabitants, who were distributed among 9467 households and 6683 families. The population density was thus 872.1 inhabitants / km². 94.6% of the population were white and 2.77% were African American. Children under the age of 18 lived in 40.3% of households. The median income was $ 50,226 per household, with 5.7% of the population living below the poverty line .
