Sam Collins (musician)
Sam Collins (born August 11, 1887 in Louisiana , † October 20, 1949 in Chicago ), also known as Crying Sam Collins , was an early American blues singer and guitarist. His best known recording is The Jail House Blues from 1927.
biography
Born in Louisiana , Collins grew up in McComb, Mississippi . In 1924 he appeared in local juke joints , often with King Solomon Hill ; both could sing in falsetto and play slide guitar .
In Richmond, Indiana , Collins made his first recording in 1927 with Yellow Dog Blues . Further recordings followed in 1931. Later recordings often appeared under pseudonyms such as Jelly Roll Hunter, Big Boy Woods, Bunny Carter and Salty Dog Sam.
In the late 1930s, Collins went to Chicago , where he died in 1949 after a heart attack at the age of 62.
