Sam Gyimah (born August 10, 1976 in Beaconsfield , Buckinghamshire ) is a British politician of the Liberal Democrats , before that Conservative Party .

Life

Gyimah's parents separated when he was six years old. His mother then went to her country of origin, Ghana , while the father stayed in the United Kingdom, and Gyimah attended the Achimota School in Accra . He returned in 1992 back to the UK and completed his GCSE and A-levels at Freman College , an integrated comprehensive school ( comprehensive school ) in Hertfordshire . He then won a scholarship to Somerville College at the University of Oxford and studied politics and economics. In 1997 he was President of the Oxford Union Debating Club. After completing his studies, he got a job with the US company Goldman Sachs .

In the 2010 general election, he was elected to the House of Commons in the East Surrey constituency for the Conservative Party. He defended the constituency in the 2015 and 2017 elections . In the Cameron I cabinet he was Lord of the Treasury from October 7, 2013 to July 14, 2014 and State Secretary in the Cabinet Office from July 14, 2014 to May 12, 2015 . In the May I cabinet , he was Parliamentary Undersecretary of State for Prisons and Probation from July 17, 2016 to January 9, 2018. Gyimah was Minister for Education and Universities in the United Kingdom from January 9, 2018 to November 30, 2018. After Theresa May resigned from the office of Prime Minister in June 2019, he announced that he wanted to run for the Conservative party chairmanship and thus run against Boris Johnson , but withdrew his application.

After Gyimah voted with the opposition against the government in order to prevent an exit from the EU without an agreement, Gyimah was expelled from the Conservative Party faction on September 4, 2019. On September 14, 2019, he left the party and joined the Liberal Democrats .

Gyimah is married and has two children.
