Sami Awad Aldeeb Abu-Sahlieh (born September 5, 1949 in Zababdeh in the West Bank ) is a Swiss lawyer and author of Palestinian descent. He runs the Center for Arabic and Islamic Law in Saint-Sulpice and teaches at universities in Switzerland, France and Italy .

Life

Sami Aldeeb comes from a Christian farming family. He attended the primary school in his home village from 1956 to 1961 and from 1961 to 65 the Minor Seminary of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem in Beit-Jala near Bethlehem. At the age of fourteen he dropped out of school to complete an apprenticeship as a tailor at the technical school of the Salesians in Bethlehem by 1968 . He then worked as a tailor and at the same time worked for the International Committee of the Red Cross . In 1970 he graduated from high school in Jenin and received a scholarship from the St. Justin factory in Freiburg to study in Switzerland.

He graduated from the University of Freiburg with cum laude in April 1974. He enrolled for a doctorate in law in Freiburg, and at the same time for political science at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva. In January 1976 he graduated with honors in political science in Geneva, the subject of his dissertation was: “Le droit des peuples à disposer d'eux-mêmes, étude analytique de la doctrine marxiste-léniniste et de la position soviétique” (see bibliography ). He then spent a year in Egypt to prepare his doctoral thesis entitled “L'impact de la religion sur l'ordre juridique, cas de l'Égypte, non-musulmans en pays d'Islam” (see bibliography). He defended his dissertation in December 1978 at the Freiburg Faculty of Law with summa cum laude and received a scholarship from the St. Justin Works in Freiburg from 1970–77 and a scholarship from the Swiss Confederation from 1977–79.

He was a civil servant at the Swiss Institute for Comparative Law in Lausanne from November 1, 1980 to December 31, 2009, where he was responsible for Arabic and Islamic law. As part of his work, he prepared reports. In May 2009 he opened his own center for Arabic and Islamic law.

On June 29, 2009 he was qualified to conduct research (HDR) at the University of Bordeaux 3. In 2010, the CNU awarded him the title of "Professor of Universities" in the subjects of private law and Arabic.

He has been a Swiss citizen since May 11, 1984. Sami Aldeeb is married and has two daughters.

Act

Aldeeb taught Arabic and Islamic law at the Institute for Canon Law in Strasbourg (1985–1991). He has taught at the Faculty of Law in Aix-en-Provence (since 2005), the Faculty of Law in Palermo (since 2007), at the CERISDI in Palermo (since 2007), the International Faculty of Comparative Law in Strasbourg (since 2007), the Faculty of Law in Trento (since 2010), the Faculty of Law in Cergy-Pontoise (since 2010), the Faculty of Law in Grenoble (since 2010) and the Theological Faculty of Lugano (since 2011).

He is the author of several books and articles on Arabic and Muslim law. He translated the Swiss constitution into Arabic. He published an Arabic-French edition of the Koran in 2008. The texts follow the chronological order of the suras in the Cairin edition of the Koran , including the variants in Jewish and Christian scriptures.

Positions

Aldeeb is a Christian but does not believe in Revelation in the traditional sense. He does not define this as “the word of God to man”, but as “the word of man about God”. He wants the worldly struggle for human rights , is against male and female circumcision, ritual slaughter , religious cemeteries, the death penalty and, in principle, the use of force. He is committed to a single democratic and secular state in Palestine / Israel and rejects the existence of two independent states, Israel and Palestine , as he considers both to be discriminatory. He holds the theory that the Koran was written by a rabbi . Aldeeb expressed various positions critical of Islam , for example, he positioned himself for a ban on the erection of minarets in Switzerland, since in his opinion the constitution allows prayer, but not “shouting”.
