Sammy (cat)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The university tomcat Sammy (* April 8, 2001 - March 21, 2013 ) was a male house cat . He achieved local fame in Konstanz because he lived at the university for over 20 semesters , was the subject of various newspaper reports, also nationally, has his own homepage and a Facebook page with 3,337 subscribers (as of September 23, 2018). On June 8, 2015, a small memorial for Sammy was unveiled on the university grounds.

biography

Sammy was born near Stockach in early April 2001 and initially lived with a family in Constance. He used his free space for excursions into the wider area, most recently only to Giessberg , the university campus (about 1 km away). Sammy saw the entire campus as his territory and knew how to harness students and employees for his needs, for example to open doors or to use an elevator for them.

When the family that brought him to Konstanz moved to nearby Switzerland, Sammy stayed at the university, has since been looked after by various university employees and was allowed to move freely around the campus (with exceptions). For example, he appeared at a performance in the university theater - naturally uninvited.

On the night of October 12, 2008, Sammy was injured in a traffic accident near the university. When he was recognized, he was taken to the veterinarian; Sammy has healed his wounds.

Sammy was euthanized on March 21, 2013 because of a tumor.

Aftermath

After the death of the cat, the memory of him was discussed among students. The political university group Die Grauen in particular campaigned for a memorial, but initially failed because of the ban on monuments at the University of Konstanz. On June 8, 2015, members of the Grays unveiled a sculpture of the cat at the entrance to the university. The historian Clemens Wischermann gave a lecture on the historical role of domestic animals. The figure has since been stolen.
