Samna Maïzoumbou (* 1898 in Tibiri , Aréoua , † April 2, 1965 in Paris ) was a Nigerien politician.

Life

Samna Maïzoumbou came from a family of local rulers from the Dogondoutchi area . He received his primary education at the École des fils des chefs in Saint-Louis in Senegal , which, like Niger, belonged to French West Africa . From 1924 he worked as an interpreter for the colonial administration in Niger, first in Gaya , then successively in Niamey , Dogondoutchi and Tahoua and from 1939 again in Gaya. Maïzoumbou joined the Nigerien Progressive Party (PPN-RDA) in 1946 , which was founded in the same year as Niger's first political party. In 1952 he was appointed head of the canton of his hometown Tibiri and ended his career as an interpreter. The appointment as head of the canton, who was entrusted with administrative tasks, corresponded to a state recognition of his function as traditional local ruler ( chef traditionnel ). At the constitutional referendum of 1958 , Maïzoumbou was one of the most active supporters of Niger's stay with France from among the ranks of the chefs traditionnels, alongside Boubacar Diallo and Mouddour Zakara .

The parliamentary elections of 1958 ended in favor of the pro-French PPN-RDA. Maïzoumbou was appointed Minister of Livestock in the first government of Hamani Diori (PPN-RDA) on December 20, 1958 . As early as January 3, 1959, he changed departments and became State Secretary to the President of the Council, i.e. to Prime Minister Diori, who led Niger to independence in 1960 and became its first President. Maïzoumbou became Secretary of State for Customs and Domestic Affairs on December 31, 1960. He set up a commission to investigate the development of the traditional legal system. He also prepared an agrarian reform under the aspects of the traditional system of rule and law. Maïzoumbou died in office in 1965 and was buried in his hometown of Tibiri.
