Coat of arms of those of Samson-Himmelstjerna

Samson-Himmelstjerna , formerly also Samson von Himmelstjerna , is the name of a Baltic noble family who probably originally came from Putten (Gelderland) or Putte (Woensdrecht) , North Brabant (NL). In 1819 the family was nicknamed "Himmelstjerna". Branches still exist today in Germany, the United States, France, and Russia.

history

The progenitor of the sex is Naeman Samson († 1583). He came to Riga in 1568 from Putten, Gelderland (NL) - perhaps also from Putte in North Brabant - and became captain of the city soldiers there. His son Hermann Samson , appointed superintendent of Livonia by Gustav Adolf in 1622 , was raised to the nobility by Queen Kristina on September 19, 1640 as Samson . He founded the now widely ramified family. Most of the descendants resided as administrative officials, lawyers and landowners in Livonia, Estonia and on the island of Oesel . The Samson-Himmelstjerna were enrolled in all four Baltic knighthoods, but also in Saxony and Sweden .

The great-great-great-grandson of Naeman Samson, Carl Gustav (1750–1825), Livonian land marshal and district administrator (Baltic States) , had five sons: Carl Hermann (1777–1858), Reinhold Johann Ludwig (1778–1858), Wilhelm Gustav (1781–1858) , Georg Friedrich (1783–1864) and Richard Bruno (1794–1844). These became the progenitors of the five lines Rauge , Urbs , Walling , Parzemois and Uelzen . Until Latvia and Estonia became independent, the family members lived almost exclusively in the Baltic States.

As early as 1872, Raoul von Samson-Himmelstjerna emigrated to the United States of America , where he founded the American branch of the family.

After the World War and the Revolution, most of the family moved to Germany in the 1920s. With the forced relocation of the last family members to the Wartheland in 1939, the family's activities in the Baltic States ended. The Falkenberg estate near Schleswig is currently owned by a branch.

Nikolai von Samson-Himmelstjerna settled in France after the First World War and became the ancestor of the French branch. His brother Georg (Juri) stayed in Russia , and descendants still live in Moscow today .

A family association has existed since 1931.

The coat of arms in the nobility diploma of 1640 is the same as the family coat of arms : split shield; on the right a blue star in silver, on the left a red-tongued black bull's head looking forward. On the helmet with golden-blue-silver covers on the right , silver-blue-gold covers on the left, a black wing, in front of it the star on the right. The bull's head and star motifs also appeared frequently in the coats of arms of families and dignitaries in the Veluwe area, Gelderland (NL).
