Velvet geckos ( Oedura ) are a genus of gecko-like from the family of the double- fingered geckos (Diplodactylidae).

features

The species of this genus can reach a head-torso length of 69 to 113 millimeters. The animals are mostly gray-violet to red-brown in color, sometimes with dark transverse bands, but these can vary within the same species. The adhesive lamellae on the feet show a great similarity with those of the African genus Afroedura , which is, however, part of the Gekkonidae family .

distribution

The distribution area of the velvet geckos includes northern and eastern Australia with isolated occurrences in the arid areas in the interior of the continent in Pilbara , the Flinders Range and the Central Ranges. Unlike most other Australian gecko genera such as Diplodactylus , Lucasium or Rhynchoedura , the species of velvet geckos are tree dwellers and often hide in crevices or climb inaccessible rock plateaus during the day.

Systematics

As early as 1984 Wells and Wellington suggested splitting off some smaller species of the velvet geckos (genus Oedura ) with very small back scales as a separate genus Amalosia . In 2012, after molecular genetic studies by Oliver et al. this concept finally implemented. In the now new genus Amalosia were Oedura jacovae , Oedura lesueurii , Oedura obscura and Oedura rhombifer added. Two other species of the genus Oedura were also placed in new genera. Oedura reticulata is now as Hesperoedura reticulata the only species of the new genus Hesperoedura and Oedura robusta became the type species of the new genus Nebulifera .

The genus Oedura currently comprises 14 species.
