The double- fingered geckos (Diplodactylidae) are a gecko- like family living in Australia , New Zealand, and New Caledonia .

features

Like the real geckos (Gekkonidae), they lack eyelids. There are ground-dwelling and tree-dwelling species which, depending on their way of life, have either well-developed or missing adhesive lamellae on their feet. You are able to vote. Two genera endemic to New Zealand, Naultinus and Hoplodactylus as well as Rhacodactylus trachyrhynchus , which occurs in New Caledonia, are ovoviviparous , the others lay two soft-shelled eggs per clutch.

Systematics

Double-fingered geckos used to belong to the Gekkonidae as a subfamily . Today, since they are considered a sister group of the Australian and New Guinean legless pinnipeds (Pygopodidae), they are viewed as a separate family. Depending on the author, 11 to 25 genera are counted among the double-fingered geckos. Part of the genera that used to belong to the subfamily Diplodactylinae now forms another new family of geckos, the Carphodactylidae .
