Samuel Lipschütz (born July 4, 1863 in Ungvár , Austria-Hungary (today Ukraine ), † November 30, 1905 in Hamburg ) was an American chess master of Hungarian origin.

Live and act

Lipschütz immigrated to New York in the United States in the early 1880s , where he quickly made an appearance as a strong chess player. In 1883 he represented the New York club for the first time against a selection from Philadelphia and defeated his opponent 2-0. In 1885 he won the tournament of the New York Chess Club and one year later played for the first time abroad at an international tournament in London , where he won over Johannes Hermann Zukertort and George Henry Mackenzie . Lipschütz won the US championship in 1890 and 1892. In 1897 he shared first place with Wilhelm Steinitz at a tournament in New York. In 1900 he won the Manhattan Chess Club championship ahead of Frank James Marshall and Jackson Whipps Showalter .

Lipschütz fell ill with a lung disease, which he had treated in Hamburg in 1905 . He died as a result of an operation.

His best historical rating was 2742 in January 1901, making him the fourth best player in the world at the time.
