action

In the year 2078, the earth has been suffering from energy shortages for a long time. The berynium occurrence on the planet Sirius 6B would have been the solution to all energy problems if the degradation by the discovered radiation had not been too dangerous. Therefore, called Alliance of miners and scientists degradation stop, while the purely profit-oriented business of the New Economic Block (NEB) pushed for further reductions. Ten years of merciless war followed. The war with nuclear weapons turned the once beautiful planet into a desolate wasteland and sparked a cold war on earth. The alliance used screamers as a weapon - small, self-reproducing robots. These autonomous, mobile bladed weapons with brains move just below the surface of the sand and dismember their opponents with rotating blades. Its name comes from the typical attack noises made by robots. Screamers cannot distinguish between friend and foe, but react to the heartbeat of living beings. Therefore, they attack anyone who is not protected by a special technical device that hides the heartbeat from the screamers.

Colonel Hendricksson, leader of a small unit of Alliance soldiers, feels abandoned by the Earth government and sets off with soldier Jefferson to the enemy camp to conduct peace negotiations with the aim of ending the war. On the way, Hendricksson meets David, a little boy with a teddy bear, and takes him out of pity. The little, innocent-looking David coined the sentence: "Can I go with you?" David turns out to be a screamer when he is shot by the emerging Becker. The black market dealer Jessica, Becker and the fearful Ross bring Hendricksson to the NEB command. But it is deserted and only populated by screamers. Their ability to disguise themselves as humans makes anyone suspicious. Becker stabs Ross.

The survivors return to the Alliance bunker, where they discover that they have all been killed by David : Creation has turned against its creators. The sentence “Can I go with you?” Now echoes through the hallways, but has turned into a horror scenario. Becker also turns out to be a robot. In the struggle for survival of the last people on Sirius 6B, all but Hendricksson and Jessica are killed. You want to escape from the planet in a small spaceship. Chuck, who commanded the bunker in the absence of Hendricksson, has now been replaced by a screamer, fights with him, but is defeated. The spaceship can only carry one person, and Hendricksson wants Jessica to fly back to Earth. Suddenly a second Jessica appears who is fighting with the first. Both are screamers, and the "bad" one kills the "good" one, but burns up in the starting engine itself. Hendricksson says goodbye to his dying Jessica. The Screamers have evolved quickly and have become more and more human-like. They even learned - as Hendricksson sarcastically points out - how to kill each other. But they also learned to love, and Jessica was afraid of what she would do on earth. Hendricksson flies back to earth. Unnoticed by him, there is a threat on board, namely the teddy bear that Hendricksson took after the destruction of the first "David". In the final scene he begins to move slowly ...

Reviews

  • “'Screamers - Tödliche Schreie' is fine genre cinema: apocalyptic science fiction horror penned by ' Blade Runner ' and ' Total Recall ' author Philip K. Dick, brought to life by fascinating special effects and fireworks complex action scenes. " (Dirk Jasper FilmLexikon)
  • "An atmospherically relatively gloomy, lengthy and resolutely staged science fiction thriller, the content of which is unreflected in political and cultural ideas from the 50s." ( Film-dienst 15/1996)
  • “The sci-fi thriller (...) shines with gripping and furious action scenes. Dark vision of the future (...) an atmospheric film that proves that you can achieve great things with a small budget. " (Www.prosieben.de)
  • “Only when the final dispute about the rescuing spaceship comes about, in addition to the standoff, full of effects, (...) really gripping action sequences. Before that, the experienced genre specialist Duguay largely relied on creating tension with the paranoia of its main characters before screamers attacks. The result is ultimately a satisfactory end-time shocker, which, however, would have done a lot more action. " (Video.de)
