Samuel Ryder (born March 24, 1858 in Preston , Lancashire , England , † January 2, 1936 in London ) was a British seed dealer from St Albans in Hertfordshire , England. His name gained worldwide fame through the establishment and foundation of the Ryder Cup , the most important team competition in professional golf .

Ryder made a fortune by selling plant seeds for the first time in so-called penny packets , i.e. small packages that were easily affordable for everyone.

It wasn't until the age of 50 that Ryder began playing golf to recover health. His passion grew quickly, and after watching a match between golfers from the island and the USA, he proposed to change the game format and in 1927 donated a trophy called the Ryder Cup.
