San Cristobal is an active, up to 1745 m high stratovolcano complex in the west of Nicaragua at the northwest end of the Cordillera Los Maribios , about 105 km northwest of the capital Managua . The cities of Chichigalpa and Chinandega are about 15 km southwest.
The volcanic complex consists of 5 individual volcanoes, the youngest and highest of which, with a crater diameter of 500 by 600 m and a pronounced conical shape, is itself called San Cristóbal (also known as "El Viejo"). It is also the highest volcano in Nicaragua. Other components of the complex are the Pleistocene volcanoes El Chonco (4 km west of San Cristóbal) and Moyotepe (4 km northeast of San Cristóbal, partially eroded ) and the directly east adjoining Volcán Casita (site of a severe landslide and lahar in 1998 ). At the east end of the complex is the Plio-Pleistocene caldera La Pelona.
Several eruptions of the San Cristóbal have been known since the 16th century. Activities ascribed to the Volcán Casita in the 16th century are not clearly documented and can also refer to other volcanoes of the Cordillera Los Maribios.
On September 8, 2012, there were three violent eruptions at San Cristóbal, as a result of which around 3000 people were evacuated from 5 communities in the vicinity of the volcano.
On April 22, 2016, there were several explosive eruptions with up to 2 km high ash clouds and subsequent ash rain in the areas 10 to 15 km south and southeast.
