Building history

The church is on Via dei Benedettini, next to San Giovanni degli Eremiti . As part of the Olivetan monastery of Santa Maria dello Spasimo , built in 1745, the church of San Giorgio was built in its present form in 1765 on the foundation walls of an early Christian church from the 4th century. The monastery, which was dissolved in 1866, has served as a barracks and the church has been converted into a parish church. In 1953 , a nearby women's prison prompted Cardinal Ernesto Ruffini to rededicate the church to St. Giuseppe Cafasso , the patron saint of the prisoners.

Building description

In front of the baroque facade are two columns that frame the portal and support a protruding, blown segmented gable . The dominant entablature divides the wall with pilasters . The upper area with the centrally arranged window is laterally accompanied by volutes and closed at the top by another entablature with a small, attached gable. The 20 meter high bell tower offers an excellent view over Palermo.

The interior of the church is decorated with stucco by Giovan Maria Serpotta, Giacomo Serpotta's great-grandson .
