San Javier is a city and a municipality in western Uruguay .
geography
The city is located in the 3rd sector of the Río Negro Department on the east bank of the Uruguay River , 35 kilometers (as the crow flies) north of Nuevo Berlín . The Esteros de Farapos National Park stretches along the Uruguay River between these two cities .
history
San Javier was founded in 1913 when 300 Russian families settled here. They were members of the " New Israel " sect , which was persecuted by Tsar Nicholas II . On November 17, 1964, Law 13.299 classified the place in the " Villa " category.

Mayor (Alcalde) of the municipality has been Anibal Facchin since 2015.
economy
The main branch of the economy is agriculture and especially the cultivation of sunflowers. The city is considered a pioneer in the production of sunflower oil in Uruguay. That is why a sunflower festival takes place in the community every year.
