San Lorenzo de Tarapacá is a place in the commune of Huara , the Región de Tarapacá in northern Chile . With about 188 inhabitants, it is located in the middle of the Atacama Desert , 1350 meters above sea level.

history

In the past, the settlement was on an important trade route for the Inca and Spanish conquistadors . For a long time it was the most important place in the region until the saltpetre boom in the middle of the 19th century brought the port of Iquique to the fore. After gaining independence from Spain, it initially belonged to Peru .

In the Saltpeter War (1879–1883), Peruvian troops defeated the Chilean units under Eleuterio Ramírez Molina (1837–1879) on November 27, 1879 . The Peruvian victory, however, had little relevance for the course of the war, as large Chilean troops had already landed on the coast near Pisagua and the Peruvians had to withdraw. A monument to the Battle of Tarapacá can now be found at the entrance to the city.

tourism

A desert-like climate with dried out valleys and bizarre rock formations run through the area, z. B. in the Quebrada de Tarapacá valley. Often one can find huge cacti , e.g. B. in the Quebrada de Aroma Valley. Many ghost villages from the time of saltpetre mining can also be visited.

A few kilometers east of Tarapacá you will find the Gigante de Atacama , an approximately 86 m tall figure carved into the rock, which is said to have been made around 1000 AD.
