Parish Church of San Miguel

The Catholic parish church of San Miguel in Eiré, a town in the municipality of Pantón in the Spanish province of Lugo in the autonomous region of Galicia, is a Romanesque church from the 12th century.

history

Tower with twin windows

The church was formerly part of a Benedictine convent that received a donation from King Alfonso VII in 1129 .

architecture

The church has a single nave and has a retracted, semicircular closed choir . The main portal is on the north facade, there is another entrance on the west facade.

The single-storey, rectangular tower rises above the nave, the broad sides of which are pierced by a twin window and the narrow sides of a simple arched window. The archivolts of the twin windows rest on columns with carved capitals .

The apse is structured by half-columns on high plinths . The roof of the apse and the nave rests on stone slabs and corbels , which are mainly carved with depictions of animals and animal heads.

North portal

The north portal is surrounded by an archivolt with a scroll frieze . The vaulted stones are provided with reliefs of circles in which rosettes are inscribed. On the keystone there is a relief of a lamb under which letters are carved. The tympanum is decorated with intertwined circles and is supported by consoles (mochetas) carved with human heads and two four-legged friends. The letters LUMA are carved on the right console , perhaps a reference to the sculptor Lucas Magister.
