The Bay of San Pablo ( English : San Pablo Bay ) is a sea bay in the US state of California . It covers about 240 km² and goes about at the level of the cities of San Pablo , after which it is named, and San Rafael southwards into the Bay of San Francisco , where the sea flows into the Pacific via the Golden Gate . In an easterly direction it is connected to Suisun Bay via the Carquinez Strait , into which the Sacramento River , California's longest river , flows.

The strong marine influences ensure a relatively balanced climate in the region with mild winter months in which migratory birds find refuge in the bays of San Pablo and San Francisco. Non- urbanized areas along the Gulf are characterized by salty swamps and boggy soils. Numerous endangered animal species have retreated to San Pablo Bay.

Large parts of the northern shore of the bay are under nature protection . On the coast there are a few beaches and smaller anchorages for boats.
