The Church of San Pietro alla Magione is located in Siena on Via Camollia.

history

Mentioned in a document since 998, the church has belonged to the Knights Templar since the 12th century, according to a document from 1148. The Templars maintained a pilgrims' hospice (la Magione) , from which the church got its name. After the suppression of the Templars in 1312, the church went to the Order of St. John , which was later named the Order of Malta . The church passed from the Order of Malta to the diocese and became a parish that still exists today. In the adjoining oratory, built in 1526 and named after the representation of Mary in the temple , is the local center of the Salesians of Don Bosco of Siena, which, inspired by Don Bosco's spirituality, has been present and active for the Christian and human education of young people for several years. The church is still the place for meetings and celebrations of the Sienese section of the Sovereign Order of Malta . In 1980 she hosted the Grand Master at the time , Angelo de Mojana di Cologna , on the occasion of the ceremony that the Order conferred the title of Sovereign on the Contrade of the Porcupine , in whose territory the Church is located.

description

The stone building in Romanesque style , with a staircase in front, has a gable facade from the 12th or 13th century with a Gothic portal from the 14th century and crowning arches, which were rebuilt at will at the beginning of the 20th century. Outside, on the back next to the apse , is the characteristic bell tower typical of the Templars. On the right is a brick chapel, which was built between 1523 and 1526 as a votive offering for the plague.

The austere appearance of the interior, with a single nave lit by narrow windows, with a raised presbytery, apse and half-timbered roof , is due to the 1957 restoration. Among the works of art is a Gothic tabernacle next to the main altar from the second half of the 14th century and fragments of monochrome frescoes (Crucifixion and Biblical stories) by Cristoforo di Bindoccio and Meo di Pero, from the end of the 14th century, from a room of the hospice to see.

In the chapel on the right is a 16th century Madonna and Child by Bartolomeo Neroni known as Riccio, the Madonna with Saints John the Baptist and Saints Peter by Diego Pesco (1760) and two very humble paintings from the 17th century with doubtful attribution, depicting St. Hugo and the martyrdom of St. Domninus on the left and right respectively.
