San Pietro di Simbranos

The Pisan country church of San Pietro di Simbranos (also San Pietro delle Immagini) is located near the SS134 about 3.5 kilometers south of Bulzi in the province of Sassari in Sardinia, alone on a wide field in the pastoral land of the maquis southeast of Castelsardo .

The church, built in the 11th century, got its present appearance in the 13th century by Benedictine monks from Montecassino . The facade and the apse were renewed, the nave was lengthened and raised and the transept was added. In contrast to the lower section , the arches in the upper part are Gothic because this part was added later. The stripes of the conspicuously designed front, divided by blind arches and half-columns, consist of horizontal layers of reddish-brown trachyte and white lime . In the portal bezelpatron saints are shown. The semicircular apse is ribbed vertically. The razor-beak-shaped sheet in the arch of the central apse window comes from the neighboring church ruins of San Nicola di Silanos . The interior of the church is unadorned. The altar and holy water font are made of silicified tree stumps from one of the numerous fossilized forests from the Miocene that are found in the municipalities of Bulzi, Laerru, Martis and Perfugas . There are two rows of small window openings on the side.
