history

View of the abandoned medieval village

San Severino is based on a castle, the oldest parts of which can be dated back to the 9th century. In the course of the centuries the castle and the village that gradually emerged on the opposite rock was considered an important military post in the national defense.

The castle later lost its importance, as the rule of the Spaniards extended over all of southern Italy. In the course of time the castle on the rock fell into disrepair. However, the residents did not leave their old houses until the middle of the 20th century and rebuilt the place a little further down the valley in the form that still exists today.

geography

San Severino is a district of Centola and lies on the banks of the Mingardo River.
