Sanath Teran Jayasuriya (born June 30, 1969 in Matara , Ceylon ) is a retired cricketer and politician from Sri Lanka. In 1997 he was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year .

Career

At the beginning of his career, Sanath Jayasuriya was considered a bowler with passable skills as a batsman. In the course of his career he increasingly turned into an all-rounder , who impressed above all with his qualities as a batsman. He played a total of 110 tests for Sri Lanka , in which he scored 6973 runs (40.07 runs per wicket) and 98 wickets . Sanath Jayasuriya made his test debut in February 1991 against New Zealand . Jayasuriya ended his testing career after testing against England in December 2007 . He also played a total of 445 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for Sri Lanka between December 1989 and June 2011 . Especially at ODIs he was able to convince with his skills as an all-rounder. In total, he achieved 323 wickets and 13,430 runs at ODIs during his career, with his ten thousandth run at an ODI in 2005. So far only Sachin Tendulkar has scored more runs at ODIs.

Sanath Jayasuriya took part in a total of five cricket world championships ( 1992 , 1996 , 1999 , 2003 and 2007 ) for the team from Sri Lanka . At the 1996 Cricket World Cup, which he won with his team, Jayasuriya was voted the best player of the tournament. He has scored a total of 1165 runs in his 38 matches at the World Cricket Championships.
