The sanatorium in Aincourt was built from 1931 to 1933 in Aincourt , a French commune in the Val-d'Oise department in the Île-de-France region . The building has been on the list of architectural monuments in France as Monument historique since 1999 .

history

The sanatorium was built from 1931 to 1933 by the architects Édouard Crevel and Paul-Jean Decaux , who won the architectural competition. The building was built in a 73 hectare park called Parc de la Bucaille and opened in July 1933. The former Seine-et-Oise department commissioned the sanatorium because tuberculosis had increased significantly. It consists of three pavilions, each for 150 men, women and children. There were also other buildings: a school, a laundry , an administration wing and apartments for the staff. A sewage treatment plant and a water tower were also built.

During the German occupation in World War II , the sanatorium served the German occupiers initially as a prison camp for Resistance fighters and then as a camp for women who were deported from there to the Ravensbrück concentration camp .

On September 15, 1942, the prison camp was closed and used as a training camp for the Groupes Mobiles de Réserve (GMR) militia . On March 31, 1943, René Bousquet , General Secretary of the Police of the Vichy regime , visited the training camp.

In 1946 the sanatorium was reopened.

architecture

The three pavilions for the sick were built 400 meters apart. They are 220 meters long and 12 meters wide. They are oriented to the southeast in order to take advantage of the optimal solar radiation. These elongated buildings have extensions at their ends that were used for medical applications in the west and kitchens, dining rooms and leisure rooms in the east. The three-story houses are set back in steps on their long sides and have large windows and balconies. The large, glazed stairwells are located in the two semicircular side extensions. All buildings are made of reinforced concrete , the floors are mostly covered with granite .

Todays use

Today the Center hospitalier du Vexin (sponsor: Groupement Hospitalier Intercommunal du Vexin ) is located in one of the large buildings. The other two were abandoned and devastated in recent years. There are plans to use them as social housing in the near future .
