The Sand to Snow National Monument is an American national monument in San Bernardino County and Riverside County in southeastern California . It was designated by President Barack Obama by a Presidential Proclamation on February 12, 2016 with an area of ​​154,000 acres (623 km²). The northern part of the Sand to Snow National Monument is in the Mojave Desert and the southern part in the Colorado Desert . The National Monument consists of two separate areas. In addition to the large main area, there is a smaller sub-area further north in the Bighorn Mountains . The Sand to Snow National Monument is bordered by Joshua Tree National Park to the east and the San Bernardino National Forest to the west . Even before the designation as a National Monument , large parts were designated as Wilderness Area . 100,000 acres are in the San Gorgonio Wilderness and 26,543 acres are in the Bighorn Mountain Wilderness . The National Monument includes land owned by the US government. The National Monument is overseen by the Bureau of Land Management and the US Forest Service . The US Forest Service serves 71,000 acres through the San Bernardino National Forest and the Bureau of Land Management manages 83,000 acres through the California Desert District .

Because of the diverse plant communities in the area such as desert , chaparral , oak forests, coniferous forests, and alpine ecosystems, the Sand to Snow National Monument is the botanically richest national monument in the United States. There are also sand dunes in the desert . The altitude goes from 300 m in the Coachella Valley to over 3,400 m in the San Bernardino Mountains . More than 1,600 plant species have been identified. The Big Morongo Canyon area is an important area for waterfowl. In Sand to Snow National Monument 240 different bird species have been recorded.

The Sand to Snow National Monument runs 24 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail . The area is home to an estimated 1,700 petroglyphs of early Indian cultures.
