Sandboarding

Sandboarding is a recreational activity similar to snowboarding , but takes place on sand . A sandboard is a piece of sports equipment in the shape of a board to be used on sand. The driver stands on the board sideways to the direction of travel.

The surface of a sandboard usually consists of Formica or Laminex . To glide better in the sand, the bottom of the board can be waxed , usually with paraffin .

Sandboareden has followers all over the world, but is more common in desert areas - especially in the western United States , western South America , North Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula .

The world championship in sandboarding was held from 1990 to 2007 in Germany on Monte Kaolino in Hirschau ( Upper Palatinate ). Monte Kaolino is around 120 meters high, has a descent length of 220 meters and an incline of around 35 degrees. The Monte Kaolino was raised by the Amberger Kaolinwerke , which piled quartz sand here for more than 100 years .
