Sandeep Bhagwati (born June 4, 1963 in Bombay, now Mumbai , India ) is a composer , artist , curator and author . Born in Mumbai to a German mother and an Indian father, Bhagwati grew up in Germany from the age of 5. He lives and works in Montreal and Québec , Canada .

education

Bhagwati attended the Athenaeum high school in Stade from 1976 to 1982 , where he graduated from high school. He then studied from 1984 to 1987 at the Mozarteum Salzburg and the Musikhochschule Munich with teachers such as Rupert Huber , Boguslaw Schaeffer and Wilhelm Killmayer and took lessons from Hans-Jürgen von Bose , Edison Denisov , Brian Ferneyhough and Tristan Murail . He received his training in computer music during a one-year course at the IRCAM / Center Georges Pompidou , Paris.

Sandeep Bhagwati wrote numerous musical works that are performed worldwide. His artistic oeuvre transcends several disciplines and genres: He is dedicated to classical work as a composer as well as researching new performative forms using electronic media and working in the multimedia performance and installation area. He also publishes theoretical texts on the current situation in the arts and writes series of radio programs for various public broadcasters. In 1991 he was co-initiator of the Munich A • DEvantgarde Festival , which he directed until 1995. Since then he has designed several festivals. The theoretical and artistic examination of the musical cultures of Asia is an essential focus of his work. Examples of this are his opera Ramanujan , which premiered in 1998 at the Munich Biennale , as well as workshops with the Ensemble Modern and Indian musicians in the years 2002–2003.

Teaching

From 2000 to 2003 he was Professor of Composition at the Karlsruhe Music Academy . Since 2006 he has held the Canada Research Chair in Inter-X Art Practice and Theory at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University , Montreal , Québec , Canada .

Prizes and awards

His work has been awarded numerous prizes and grants, including a. with the European Composition Prize of the Berlin Academy of the Arts and the Ernst von Siemens Sponsorship Prize. From 1995 to 1998 he was a composer at the IRCAM in Paris, guest composer in Royaumont, at the ZKM Karlsruhe, at the IEM Graz (Institute for Electronic Music and Acoustics) and with the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn; In 2004/2005 he received a scholarship from the international artist house Villa Concordia in Bamberg .
