Sandra Peters

Sandra Peters (born September 6, 1969 in Bonn ) is a German artist. She lives and works in Berlin .

Life

After graduating from high school in Hanover in 1989 , Peters took up a two-year artistic guest study at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris , which was followed by training as a goldsmith at the Knauth & Hagen jewelry gallery in Bonn. At AR Penck at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and then at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden with Ulrike Grossarth (comprehensive artistic work) and Martin Honert (sculpture), she continued her artistic training, which she completed with a diploma in 2001 and completed a two-year course as Master student added.

From 1999 to 2000, Peters taught as a visiting professor at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena (USA). This was followed by internships in architectural model making at the Berlin companies Monath & Menzel GmbH and Werk5 Modellbau. She then worked as a freelancer in the team at the Barkow Leibinger architectural office (Berlin). From 2004 to 2007, Peters managed the model making workshop at the architects Sauerbruch Hutton (Berlin). In 2011 and 2012, she was invited to the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia USA, where she taught as a visiting professor in the summer semester.

Peter's artistic work is thematically located at the interface with architecture. In relation to architecture, the relationship between people and materials and their location in our world or society can be reflected on. Peters is interested in the extent to which the rooms (buildings and urban spaces) in which we live influence our perception of the world. In her work, dealing with the topic of space forms the starting point for her reflections, which she makes situationally tangible in her work using various artistic media (sculpture, installations, sound, moving images, film, performances). One way to deal with this is to shift architectural elements from another context and place them in the exhibition space. Through the shift and the resulting new spatial situation, it creates the possibility of an experience in which judgments that have already been made, as well as viewing, hearing and movement habits are called into question. At the same time, it is their aim to point out the place or the space as such and to reveal the structure of the place and the history inscribed in it. Peter's works are conceived in such a way that they form a counterpoint to the exhibition space. This creates a field of tension in which social conventions are broken and a different perspective on the contexts in which we live is permitted.
