The Sandy Creek Covered Bridge State Historic Site is located in Jefferson County , Missouri . The historic bridge in the 508-acre state park connects the road from Hillsboro administrative center over Sandy Creek to St. Louis County .

Of the original 30 covered wooden bridges in Missouri, only four have survived. John H. Morse constructed the Sandy Creek Covered Bridge as part of a nationwide rebuilding program after the Civil War . The dimensions are over 22.5 m in length and 5.5 m in width, the clear height is not quite 4 m. The construction as a covered bridge primarily served as weather protection for the wooden and metal parts used in the construction.

In 1886 the bridge was destroyed by a spring flood . Henry Steffin rebuilt the bridge true to the original in August of the same year .

In 1970 the Sandy Creek Covered Bridge was entered on the National Register of Historic Places . In 1984 another flood caused severe damage that required repairs. The bridge is now only open to pedestrian traffic. The shape of an open barn in connection with the red paint make the bridge a popular motif for photographers and painters.

The Burfordville Covered Bridge as part of the Bollinger Mill State Historic Site and the Locust Creek Covered Bridge are built on the same principle.
