The Air Force Medical School (SanSLw) was located in the Emil von Behring barracks at Bundesstraße 19 until it was closed in 1996 . It formed the former district of Klingholz in the municipality of Giebelstadt in the district of Würzburg and was thus the only Bundeswehr barracks with its own zip code.
The school consisted of four inspections, the headquarters company and the paramedic unit. Her main area of responsibility was the general basic training of medical soldiers. This was followed by training in first aid and nursing . The graduates were mainly used in paramedic units and military hospitals. Occasionally the school also held advanced training courses for reservists . In 1989 the first female crew ranks and non-commissioned officers of the Air Force medical service began their service in Klingholz. After the reorganization of the medical services in the German Bundeswehr, there is no longer any separate training for air force, army or naval paramedics. The central medical service of the Bundeswehr was created. The barracks were finally closed on December 31, 1996. The predecessor of the SanSLw was the "Air Force Medical Training Battalion" with 4 training companies in Fürstenfeldbruck (1st company and headquarters), Lauda in Franconia (Tauber-Franken barracks, 2nd company), Kempten (Allgäu) ( artillery barracks , 3rd company), Neustadt near Marburg (4th company). In the autumn of 1968 the merger took place in the newly built Emil von Behring barracks in Klingholz and in 1972 it was restructured to form the SanSLw.
Today there is an "innovation park" with over 500 jobs on the former barracks area of 12.5 hectares .
