Saint Mary Magdalene Church

The Sankt-Maria-Magdalena-Kirche is the Protestant parish church of the city of Templin in Brandenburg . It belongs to the parish of Upper Havel country of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Oberlausitz and Templin is located in the center of Old Town. The church, built in the middle of the 18th century as the fourth house of worship, is the only building in the city wall ring that faces east-west.

Architecture and history

prehistory

The oldest church building made of field stones is documented in the 13th century, it was burned down in 1492. A new building then only stood until 1530, the next church until 1618. In 1539 the Reformation was introduced at this church . The church, previously known as St. Mary's Church , also received its current name. The next building burned down in a town fire on August 24, 1735. In addition to the stump of the tower, the sacristy was also preserved . This building had a high, steep roof and a stepped tower that resembled the gate towers that are still preserved today. Inside, this church probably had a Gothic ribbed vault. The sacristy dates from the 15th century and has a five-part rib vault. Carved furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries make up its equipment.

Construction and architecture

The three-aisled brick church, built according to plans by the Berlin architect KS Schmidt and consecrated in 1749, was built on the site of the previous late Gothic building that was destroyed in 1735 . Remnants of the previous building including the field stone base were included in the new building. Today's church is built as a hall church and is supported by four yokes . The church tower is to the west of the ship. To the east is the polygonal closed choir . The construction of the church tower dragged on until 1751.

The facade is plastered and is structured by large arched windows and specially highlighted keystones . The windows are framed by flat strips and recessed mirror surfaces. There are buttresses on the north side of the choir . There is a large portal niche on the south side. It is framed by pilasters , closed in an arched segment and designed as a front side. Above the portal, which is also framed by pilasters, there is a curved roof and an inscription panel. Above this is an arched window on a grooved niche base.

West side

On the west side in the basement of the 70-meter-high tower there is a four-tiered portal designed as a pointed arch . The portal is framed by a flat rectangular template. The steps of the garment are designed alternately burr and rounded. While the lower storey of the tower is rectangular in shape, the upper, plastered storeys have a square floor plan. At the transition from the lower to the upper floors there is a low floor decorated with rustication . The outer walls of this floor are sloping, so that the tower tapers upwards. In the middle of the walls there is a circular window. The tower floor above has rounded corners that are framed by pilasters. The pilasters end in an entablature with parapets. The second floor of the tower is clearly set back. The pilasters arranged on the corners result in an almost octagonal floor plan. The church tower is crowned by a lantern , which in turn ends in a pointed helmet .

The pastor's house is on the opposite side of the street.

Interior design

The interior of the church is spanned by a beamed ceiling. The ceiling rests on square pillars with flat rectangular templates on all sides. Pilasters on flat backs are assigned to them on the outer walls.

The choir has bent pillars and is three-sided inside. It is surrounded by a six-sided association. The room layout and the arrangement of the pillars probably go back to the previous building from the 15th century.

There is a circumferential gallery on the west side and in the aisles . It was created when the interior of the church was redesigned in the style of late classicism in 1877/1878. On the gallery is a rococo- style organ prospect by Gottlieb Scholtze from 1769. In 1994, with the help of donations, a new Schuke organ was purchased, which replaced a predecessor organ from Jehmlich from 1921.

In the church there is an iron sacrificial box with elaborate fittings, which is dated to the year 1748.

The interior of the church was restored in 1963 and the facade between 1995 and 1998. On May 3, 1970, the future German Chancellor Angela Merkel was confirmed in the church .

In the anteroom of the church there are memorial plaques and a memorial wall for all Templin dead from previous wars: from the 1870/1871 battles to the Second World War .
