Sankt Knuds Kirke

The Evangelical Lutheran Sankt Knuds Kirke is a Romanesque church on the Danish island of Bornholm . It is located about 3 km east of Rønne on a hill with a view over Rønne and is named after the Danish King Canute IV. The Saint (* 1042, r. 1080-1086), who was canonized in 1101 ,

History and architecture

The church is the smallest Romanesque church on Bornholm. The apse , choir and nave were built around 1150, the tower a little later, but still in Romanesque times. The original tower was a narrow fortress tower and not suitable for hanging bells; perhaps there was a wooden bell stand outside the church, but no traces of it have survived. The tower was rebuilt in 1878, since then two bells have been hanging in it, one from 1460 and one from 1702. The nave was raised twice, most recently in 1906. The north and south portals have been preserved; the vestibule in front of the south portal was added later, but may contain remains of Romanesque walls. A rune stone is walled in above the south portal. The north portal is bricked up today, with a replica of the preserved gate in front of it, the original hangs on the wall of the church.

The church is built of field stones, the base, building edges and the frames of doors and windows are made of limestone. The apse is covered with lead, the choir with brick, nave and porch with slate and the tower with sheet iron.

The apse has a hemispherical vault, the choir a barrel vault, the nave a flat modern wooden ceiling. The chancel arch is surrounded by two side altar niches, the left one is intact, the right one pierced by the stairway to the pulpit. The west wall of the nave, which was still built in the Romanesque period, supports the east wall of today's tower, it opens with a flat arcade . Behind it is the original west wall of the ship with two low arcades.

Furnishing

The altar is medieval. The renaissance style altarpiece from 1596 has two fields with paintings from 1762: the sacrifice of Isaac is depicted on the left , the crucifixion of Christ on the right.

The pulpit with sound cover and the paintings of its four fields were created together with the altarpiece. The fields show the evangelists and their symbols , from left to right Matthew with the man, Mark with the lion, Luke with the bull and John with the eagle. The fields are surrounded by five naively carved herms with bodies made of fruit.

The Romanesque baptismal font made of granite dates from the time the church was built.

The organ was built in 1955 by the Frobenius Orgelbyggeri company in Copenhagen.
