The Rotte Sankt Martin , located in the municipality of Sankt Paul im Lavanttal, southwest of the main town, is located on the northern slope of the Martinikogel. The village, located in the southeast of the Austrian state of Carinthia , had a population of 21 on January 1, 2020.Saint Martin is located in the Granitztal, a side valley of the Lavanttal through which the Granitzbach flows.

Parish Church of St. Martin

The parish church is raised above the place and surrounded by a cemetery. The church building was founded around 1140 by Amelbert von Kholniz.

The largely Romanesque building was changed to Gothic, Baroque and at the end of the 19th century. In 1998 the restoration took place with reconstruction of the baroque architectural polychromy. The Gothic building has buttresses, a northern extension, a southern tower with a low pyramid roof, triple windows and tracery nose windows in the bell storey. On the south wall of the nave there is a porch, closed to the west, leading to the gallery stairway. To the west, the building has a wooden canopy. The west entrance has a lintel and there are life-size busts of bishops, presumably from the 17th century, in the walls.

Interior

The five-bay nave is vaulted over wall pillars, the nave walls diverge towards the east, Gothic in core, then changed to Baroque. The west gallery is slightly vaulted, above a flat barrel with lance caps, and beneath it is a small niche to the south. To the north in front of the choir, a round arch opening leads to a longitudinally oblong, groin vaulted chapel extension from the 19th century. A narrow, round-arched triumphal arch is provided with fighters. The one-bay, Gothic choir has a five-eighth end and is vaulted over consoles. A baroque, groin-vaulted sacristy is attached to the north. The tower ground floor is provided with a barrel vault. In the choir there is a tabernacle with large ogival windows. The nave has large rectangular windows. The choir contains painted crosses of the Apostles.

There is also a large figural tombstone of Leonhard von Kholniz, inscribed 1587. A small tombstone of Barbara Windischgraetz, inscribed 1591. Also a death shield of the last Kholniz.

Furnishing

The baroque high altar dates from 1777 and has a statue of St. Martin. To the side there are sacrificial passages , above them the figures of the two farmer saints Isidor and Notburga. In the essay there is a picture of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. On the choir walls hang the canvas paintings "Glory of the Benedictine Order" and "Marriage of Mary" from the 18th century. Choir benches and chairs date from the second quarter of the 18th century. Above the two side altars are the altar leaves with the holy hermit and the penitent Maria Magdalena, in a richly carved frame, date of origin around 1725, reliquaries are included in the frame. On the left two late Gothic statues of St. Nicholas and the Holy Bishop, made at the end of the 15th century. On the right the baroque figures of St. John the Baptist and St. Sebastian. The pulpit was created around 1730. The baptismal font is marked 1529. In the side chapel (baptistery) there is a canvas painting "Pietá" from the middle of the 18th century, the crucifix comes from the 19th century, the canvas painting presents the martyrs John and Paulus as weather saints, man of sorrows, framed like the side altar paintings , creation around 1725. In 1998 the organ was renewed. The bells date from the 14th century and by Rudolf Fiering, inscribed 1650.

Karner

The Karner is located north of the church. The Romanesque rotunda has a conical roof. Inside it has a flat wooden ceiling. The ossuary is walled up, the conversion to a chapel was done by Günter Kraus.

Cemetery chapel

It dates from the 19th century, with baroque reliefs " Pietà " and " Holy Family ".

Rectory

The rectory is located southeast of the church. It is a two-story baroque building, named 1625. Inside, it has simple stucco ceilings. In 1986 the exterior was restored.

Water sources

To the south of the parish church there are two sockets that feed the high-quality spring water into the village of Sankt Paul and supply the population with drinking water.

Granitztal railway stop

The place is connected to the ÖBB network and has its own stop. The railway line connects the Granitztal with Wolfsberg in the north, as well as Bleiburg in the south and the western capital of Klagenfurt . After several years of construction, the section between Sankt Paul im Lavanttal and Bleiburg was officially opened in 1963 by Federal President Adolf Schärf .
